Ingredients

Cake

Hazelnut Buttercream Frosting

  • 3 cups (6 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 9 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 4 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 1/3 cups hazelnut spread
  • Brown food gel

Toppings

  • Whole, toasted hazelnuts for decorating
  • Betty Crocker™ Chocolate Sprinkles, for decorating

Steps

  •
    1
Heat oven to 350ºF. Grease bottom of 3 6” round pans.
  •
    2
In a large mixing bowl, beat the cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs with an electric mixer on medium speed until combined.
  •
    3
Divide the batter evenly between the pans. Bake 26 to 31 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour.
  •
    4
In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, sugar, and salt with an electric mixer on low speed until smooth.
  •
    5
Add in the vanilla extract and heavy cream and beat until combined.
  •
    6
Increase speed to medium and beat until fluffy. Set aside 1 cup of white frosting for decorating.
  •
    7
Add the hazelnut spread to remaining buttercream and beat until combined.
  •
    8
Place 2 cups of the hazelnut buttercream frosting in a medium bowl and tint it dark brown by adding the food gel, a few drops at a time, stirring between additions until the desired color is reached.
  •
    9
    Frost cake as desired.
