Cake
- 1 box Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ Spice Cake Mix
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 3 eggs
Maple Buttercream Frosting
- 3 cups (6 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
- 9 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 4 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 teaspoons maple extract
- 3/4 cup heavy cream
- Purple Betty Crocker™ gel food colors

Instructions

Step1Heat oven to 350ºF. Grease bottom of 3 6” round pans.

Step2In a large mixing bowl beat the cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs with an electric mixer on medium speed until combined.

Step3Divide the batter evenly between the pans. Bake 26 to 31 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour.

Step4In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, sugar, and salt with an electric mixer on low speed until smooth.

Step5Add in the vanilla extract and heavy cream and beat until combined.

Step6Increase speed to medium and beat until fluffy.

Step7Set aside 5 cups of buttercream frosting. Tint 4 cups dark purple by adding a few drops of food gel at a time and stirring between each addition until the desired color is reached. Leave one cup white.

Step8Tint the remaining buttercream frosting light purple by adding 1 drop of food gel at a time and stirring between each addition until the desired color is reached.

Step9Frost cake as desired.
