Loaded with the best flavors of fall, these easy-to-prepare, homemade doughnuts need only 6 ingredients and are ready to enjoy in just 20 minutes! From our The Betty Crocker Quick to the Table cookbook, you can get a jump on the preparation (and cut down on the prep time) by starting with Bisquick mix. By stirring in brown sugar, applesauce and apple pie spice, these tasty, sweet rings of delight are bursting with the autumnal flavors we crave for warmth and comfort when there’s a chill in the air. Coated with a sugar-and-spice coating, they’ll rival any food truck or fair doughnuts around.

Love doughnuts but need to eat gluten free? No problem! Check out our gluten-free variation in the tip section below. Destined to become a new tradition, these doughnuts will be gobbled up in no time when enjoyed for breakfast or as a special snack after a trip to the apple orchard or any family outing! These indulgent pastries are so easy to make, you’ll get requests to make them often!

Fry these sweet, spicy gems in a deep fryer, if you have one (it keeps the temperature fluctuating to produce doughnuts that are consistently golden brown on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside). Or use a large saucepan, if you don’t have a deep fryer. You can cool and store the oil for additional batches. Strain the cooled oil though cheesecloth and store it in a sealed container for up to 3 months This is about to become one of your favorite new recipes!

  •
    2
Meanwhile, in medium bowl, stir Doughnut ingredients until well blended. Gather dough into a ball. Place dough on surface dusted with Bisquick mix; knead 10 to 12 times. Roll dough with rolling pin 1/2-inch thick. Cut with 3-inch doughnut cutter; reroll dough to make remaining doughnuts.
  •
    3
In gallon-size resealable food-storage plastic bag, combine Topping ingredients.
  •
    4
Carefully place 2 or 3 doughnuts at a time in hot oil. Fry 1 to 1 1/2 minutes, turning once, until golden brown. Using slotted spoon, remove doughnuts to paper towel–lined heatproof plate; cool 2 to 3 minutes. Place 3 to 4 doughnuts in bag; seal and shake to coat all sides.

Tips from the Betty Crocker Kitchens

  • tip 1
Store any remaining doughnuts in a covered container. Microwave 1 or 2 doughnuts on High for 10 seconds for a fresh-from-the-fryer taste.
  • tip 2
Be careful not to overcook these doughnuts as they become tough and dense. Fry just until golden brown.
  • tip 3
Gluten-Free Spiced Applesauce Doughnuts, use 2 cups of Bisquick™ Gluten Free Mix instead of the Original Bisquick. Add 3 eggs and increase the apple pie spice in the doughnuts to 1 3/4 teaspoons.
