Fry these sweet, spicy gems in a deep fryer, if you have one (it keeps the temperature fluctuating to produce doughnuts that are consistently golden brown on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside). Or use a large saucepan, if you don’t have a deep fryer. You can cool and store the oil for additional batches. - Vegetable oil for deep frying
Doughnuts
- 2 cups Bisquick™ Original Pancake & Baking Mix
- 1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
Topping
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
Instructions

Step1In deep fryer or 3-quart saucepan, heat 2 to 3 inches of oil to 375°F.

Step2Meanwhile, in medium bowl, stir Doughnut ingredients until well blended. Gather dough into a ball. Place dough on surface dusted with Bisquick mix; knead 10 to 12 times. Roll dough with rolling pin 1/2-inch thick. Cut with 3-inch doughnut cutter; reroll dough to make remaining doughnuts.

Step3In gallon-size resealable food-storage plastic bag, combine Topping ingredients.

Step4Carefully place 2 or 3 doughnuts at a time in hot oil. Fry 1 to 1 1/2 minutes, turning once, until golden brown. Using slotted spoon, remove doughnuts to paper towel–lined heatproof plate; cool 2 to 3 minutes. Place 3 to 4 doughnuts in bag; seal and shake to coat all sides.
