There are many kinds of grains and rice, so where to start? Here's a great place to start, and with these helpful tips, you'll be off and running in no time.


Cooking Grains

So you bought grains in bulk and are wondering how to cook them?  Here’s a cheat sheet:

Long-grain white rice: Heat 1 cup rice and 2 cups water to boiling.  Reduce heat to low.  Cover and simmer 15 minutes.  Makes: 3 cups

Long-grain brown rice: Heat 1 cup rice and 2¾ cups to boiling.  Reduce heat to low.  Cover and simmer 45 to 50 minutes.  Makes: 4 cups

Wild rice: Heat 1 cup wild rice and 2½ cups water to boiling.  Reduce heat to low.  Cover and simmer 40 to 50 minutes.  Makes: 3 cups

Barley: Heat 4 cups water to boiling.  Stir in barley.  Reduce heat to low.  Cover and simmer 45 to 50 minutes.  Makes: 4 cups

Bulgur: Pour 3 cups boiling water over bulgur.  Cover and soak 30 to 60 minutes (do not cook).  Drain if needed.  Makes: 3 cups

Kasha: Pour 2 cups boiling water over kasha.  Cover and soak 10 to 15 minutes (do not cook).  Drain if needed.  Makes: 4 cups
