Getting Started

To make your perfect cake pops, you’ll need a few key ingredients and tools. Here’s what you’ll need to get started.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup sour cream (or plain yogurt)

Tools

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Stand mixer
  • Microwave-safe bowls for melted chocolate
  • Cake pans
  • Cake pop sticks

For the fluffiest cake pop dough, be sure to use Betty Crocker cake mix. The texture and flavor are guaranteed to make your cake pops a hit!

How to Make Cake Pops

Let’s dive into the process of making the perfect cake pop base. Follow these simple steps to create delicious, moist cake pop dough:

  1. In a mixing bowl, add your cake mix. Mix milk, eggs, and melted butter until well combined. Add vanilla and sour cream (or plain yogurt) and mix until fully incorporated.
  2. Pour into the desired cake pan and bake according to box instructions. Your cake is ready when a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
  3. Once out of the oven, cover the top of the cake pan with a cutting board to trap in heat and create moisture for 10 minutes.
  4. After slightly cooling but while still warm, place the cake into your mixer and blend until it forms a dough.
  5. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and freeze for 10 minutes to chill.

Use the dough immediately or wrap it in a paper towel, seal it in a bag, and refrigerate. It stays fresh for a few days until you're ready to make cake pops.

  • Mini Red Cupcake Liners
  • Edible Glitter
  • Red Chocolate Candy Melts
  • Yellow Chocolate Candy Melts
  • Blue Chocolate Candy Melts

Optional, for packaging

  1. Melt the chocolate: Melt the red, navy blue, and yellow chocolate candy melts in separate microwave-safe bowls. Heat in 15-20 second intervals, stirring after each interval.
  2. Insert cake pop stick: Dip a cake pop stick into the melted red chocolate, then insert it into the chilled cake pop. Let it sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes until slightly firm.
  3. Coat with navy blue chocolate: Dip the entire cake pop into the navy blue chocolate and tap gently to remove excess chocolate. For an extra sparkle, add edible glitter while the chocolate is still wet. Leave to dry completely (approximately 15-20 minutes at room temperature).
  4. Add yellow accents: Once the navy blue chocolate is dry, dip the bottom half of the cake pop into yellow melted chocolate and allow it to dry completely (approximately 15-20 minutes at room temperature).
  5. Finish with a red bow: Attach a red bow (made in a mold) between the blue and yellow sections of the cake pop using a dot of melted chocolate.
  6. Let everything dry completely before serving. Your cake pops are now ready to enjoy!
