Alfredo sauce is a rich, flavorful white Italian sauce made from butter, heavy cream and Parmesan cheese. It's a decadent and tasty alternative to marinara and other pasta sauces that offers a uniquely creamy texture and satisfying taste to your meals.
Choosing alfredo sauce over marinara or other pasta sauces is simply a matter of personal preference. Some enjoy the light, buttery flavor and creamy texture of alfredo sauce. In addition, its rich, comforting nature is ideal for those who prefer non-tomato based sauces.
While most pasta shapes pair well with our alfredo sauce, fettuccine is a traditional favorite due to its wide surface area that's ideal for coating with the creamy alfredo sauce.
Alfredo sauce is versatile and complements a variety of toppings. Grilled chicken, shrimp, or steamed vegetables like broccoli are fantastic choices. Sprinkle with extra parmesan cheese and fresh parsley for extra flavor and color.
Alfredo Sauce Ingredients
Every spoonful of alfredo sauce is a celebration of simplicity and flavor. Silky ribbons of pasta bathed in a rich, creamy sauce offer a culinary experience like no other. Find out the key ingredients for alfredo sauce and why they make it one of the most beloved Italian sauces.
Heavy Cream: This ingredient adds a lavish creaminess to the dish, creating a luxurious texture.
Parmesan Cheese: Known for its unique, sharp flavor, earthy Parmesan cheese adds an extra layer of dimension to alfredo sauce.
Salt and Pepper: Sure, they’re standard seasonings, but these key players amp up the flavors of the sauce without overshadowing the subtleness of other ingredients.
Butter: As it melts within the sauce, the butter imparts an unbeatable velvety texture.
How to Make Alfredo Sauce
Making Homemade Alfredo Sauce is surprisingly simple. We'll guide you through the general steps, but detailed instructions can be found below.
Heat Cream
Bring the cream just to a boil before reducing the heat. Don't let it stay at a hard boil too long.
Reduce the Cream
Simmer the cream until it's thick enough to pull a spatula or spoon through it which leaves a line showing the bottom of the pan.
Add the Cheese
Stirring in the Parmesan cheese at this point allows it to melt and lose its graininess for a superbly smooth sauce.
Stir in the Butter
Adding the cold butter slowly creates a smooth, thick sauce that won't break.
Toss with Pasta
For best results, toss the hot sauce with hot pasta, allowing the sauce to thoroughly coat the pasta for an indulgent dinner your family will request time and again.

Storing Leftover Alfredo Sauce
While this alfredo sauce recipe is best served immediately, it can be stored for several days and reheated on the stovetop or in the microwave.
Fridge: Place leftovers in a covered container and refrigerate immediately. The alfredo sauce can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.
Reheat: To reheat the leftovers, transfer individual servings into a small saucepan and cook over low heat, whisking often, until simmering. You can also microwave the sauce by placing in a small microwavable bowl. Cover loosely and reheat on medium-high (70%), stirring every 30 seconds, until thoroughly heated. If sauce is too thick, stir in water a tablespoonful at a time, until desired consistency is reached.
Freeze: We do not recommend freezing, as the dairy in the mixture could separate and become watery.
