Leavening agents are the MVP of many cakes and help them rise and become light and fluffy! But did you know that the fizzy, carbon dioxide gas bubbles in soda pop act like a leavening agent?

In the scientific method, you always start with a question. When baking with soda pop, you might ask: Will the cake take on the soda pop's flavor? Does dark or light soda pop make a difference? Will a dark or light soda color affect the color of the cake?

After you have your question, you can head to our Learn page to study up and form your hypothesis — which just means, what do you think the answer to your question will be?

Now it's time to test your hypothesis!

Prep Time:

10 mins

Total Time:

1 hr 45 mins

Tools & Materials

  • 1 box of your favorite Betty Crocker cake mix - we recommend vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry
  • A can (12 oz) of a carbonated beverage of your choice for each cake mix that you've chosen - for best results, try a fruit-flavored soda pop like grape, strawberry, orange, or lemon
  • 1 cupcake tin
  • Spoon or scoop
  • Mixer
  • Mixing bowl
  • Toothpicks
  • Betty Crocker Frosting of your choice (if desired!)

Directions

Heat oven to 350°F and prep your cupcake tins with liners or nonstick spray. Next, choose which cake mix flavor you'd like to pair with each soda pop flavor.

In a large bowl, beat (1) dry cake mix and (1) soda pop with an electric mixer on low speed for 1 minute. Scrape the side of the bowl, then mix on a medium speed for 2 minutes.

Carefully fill each cupcake mold with your batter. Bake your cupcakes for 15 to 18 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center is clean when removed.

Let your pan cool for 10 minutes before it's moved to a cooling rack. Let the cake cool completely, for about 1 hour.

If desired, frost with Betty Crocker™ frosting.

Repeat with other flavor combos!
