Homemade Spice Rub

How about a homemade gift from your kitchen that takes only minutes to make?

During the holidays, many of us want to send some love from our kitchens by way of a homemade gift. Problem is, most of us don’t have much time to spare. My spice rub solves that dilemma. It looks beautiful yet is easy and inexpensive to pull together. Best of all, everyone will love it!

You probably already have extra spices in your cabinet, so you’ll only need to pick up a few jelly jars and ribbon.

My combination of spices works great for just about any meal. I like to rub it on a chicken before roasting or grilling. And it’s great on steak and shrimp. Another way to use this rub is to turn it into a marinade. Simply apply to meat, poultry or fish, place in a container or plastic bag and coat with olive oil. Marinate for at least 20 minutes before cooking.

This blend of seasonings also creates a great salad dressing by simply adding a tablespoon or two of olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

The mix is so versatile. You can substitute ingredients, like dried cilantro or oregano in place of the parsley.

Jelly jars are awesome, inexpensive containers for this rub because you can find them at most grocery stores. The spices and herbs looks lovely layered in the jars (but remind recipients to mix it up before using). Add a pretty ribbon and you have lovely little gifts which are great for teachers and office workers. It takes no time at all to make a personal gift and send a little love from your kitchen!
